Parent Readiness Checklist

An elevated way to confirm you're truly prepared—logistically, financially, and emotionally—to move forward with a surrogate relationship.

We have chosen (or are actively selecting) a fertility clinic to guide screening and transfer. We have completed—or scheduled—our medical consult to confirm surrogacy is the right next step. We're clear on our embryo plan: embryos are frozen, in progress, or we will pursue donation. We understand the clinic's general requirements for a gestational carrier and the expected timeline. We're prepared to move forward with steady momentum once the right alignment is found.

We understand the major financial categories: surrogate compensation, medical expenses, legal, insurance review, travel, escrow, and contingencies. We are prepared to fund escrow appropriately before key milestones begin. We have a realistic compensation range in mind—knowing it varies by experience, location, insurance, and arrangement specifics. We've built in a thoughtful contingency buffer for the unexpected (because preparedness is protection).

We will retain independent reproductive law counsel (and fully support the surrogate having her own counsel). We understand the agreement will clearly outline expectations, boundaries, reimbursements, confidentiality, and decision-making. We acknowledge surrogacy is state-dependent and we will proceed in a legally sound way for every state involved. We're prepared to complete the legal agreement before transfer planning begins.

We understand insurance must be reviewed carefully and cannot be assumed. We are prepared to address coverage gaps with appropriate guidance if needed. We're grounded in the reality that medical outcomes can be unpredictable—and we're committed to following clinical direction with maturity and calm.

We can clearly articulate what alignment looks like for us—without treating the surrogate relationship as a checklist. We know our non-negotiables versus our preferences (and we can share them respectfully). We are prepared to approach differences with grace, not control. We value mutual comfort, consent, and emotional safety as essential—not optional.

We know what communication feels supportive to us (and we're open to what feels supportive to her). We understand a healthy match includes autonomy, boundaries, and mutual respect. We are prepared to build a relationship that is personal and meaningful—not transactional. We've discussed discretion with family/friends and have a thoughtful plan for privacy and sharing.

We've acknowledged and processed the weight of this journey—loss, waiting, hope, and vulnerability. We feel steady enough to choose alignment over urgency. We have support in place (counselor, therapist, faith/community support, trusted mentor). We are ready to show up with gratitude, patience, and emotionally intelligent communication.

We're prepared for travel as needed for key milestones and delivery. We have flexibility around work and schedules, understanding surrogacy runs on medical timing. We've considered delivery preferences, hospital presence, and the immediate postpartum plan. We understand that preparation reduces stress—for everyone.

We are aligned on communication style, boundaries, and key medical/legal decisions. We agree on how decisions will be made—quickly, respectfully, and without escalation. We are committed to being a calm, unified presence throughout the process.

We can move forward within the next 30–90 days if the right match is found. We are prepared to respond promptly and respectfully during introductions. We understand readiness isn't perfection—it's clarity, preparation, and integrity.

If you checked most of these boxes: you're not just hopeful—you're prepared.

And that level of readiness is what makes the entire experience feel protected, calm, and beautifully intentional.
